The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011 is to be divided in three equal parts between Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work. We cannot achieve democracy and lasting peace in the world unless women obtain the same opportunities as men to influence developments at all levels of society.
In October 2000, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1325. The resolution for the first time made violence against women in armed conflict an international security issue. It underlined the need for women to become participants on an equal footing with men in peace processes and in peace work in general.
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is Africa’s first democratically elected female president. Since her inauguration in 2006, she has contributed to securing peace in Liberia, to promoting economic and social development, and to strengthening the position of women. Leymah Gbowee mobilized and organized women across ethnic and religious dividing lines to bring an end to the long war in Liberia, and to ensure women’s participation in elections. She has since worked to enhance the influence of women in West Africa during and after war. In the most trying circumstances, both before and during the “Arab spring”, Tawakkul Karman has played a leading part in the struggle for women’s rights and for democracy and peace in Yemen.
It is the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s hope that the prize to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman will help to bring an end to the suppression of women that still occurs in many countries, and to realise the great potential for democracy and peace that women can represent.

About Installation of REVEAL

I became aware of the reflection of my body in a tree in 1983. It had a tilt in its torso just like mine. In time and scale it differed. But I felt deeply connected. Because the tree was very large and relatively still I could read it by a long, long stare. Because it had occurred again and again in similar form through these centuries and appears just now in my back field I can count on the fact of its existence.

This installation came about from the combination of seeing John Davis’ amazing horse/carriage elevator shaft and a wondrous enormous hunk of a tree that I have kept for 5 years. By hanging the 15 ft tree between three floors, it can be seen by looking up, and, it will be seen from three levels if one climbs the stairs to the floors above. I have cut the tree vertically into five parts. These strips are similar to the basic segmented construction of all trees which can be seen most clearly when they are in early growth, or when struck by lightning, or in late decay. This tree was in none of those states

when it was taken down in full health. It was too tall. It threatened a house. It was cut down. The five vertical parts I have hung slightly apart . I want to see inside this tree. I want it to be transparent to me, despite its solidity. I want to experience the precariousness of its existence as I experience its absolute un-defeatability. I want to know it is itself.

Arnolfini presents a special exhibition of two works, made fifty years apart, by the influential British painter, Gillian Ayres. One of the most significant artists of her generation, Ayres exhibited several times at Arnolfini during its early days, and her painting Break-off was produced the year Arnolfini was established in 1961. This important work from the Tate collection has been selected on the special occasion of our 50th anniversary by Annabel Rees, co-founder of Arnolfini. Break-off is presented alongside Marsland, a new work painted this year.

Ulster Country has the largest concentration of artists per capita of anywhere in the country. The amount of talent and critically acclaimed work is astonishing. Brooklyn Artists Gym is proud to bring the work of twelve top artists to the city for two weeks, starting May 14.

From the rich, iconic images of Yale Epstein to the darkly playful figures of Polly Law, from the mysterious mixed-media drawings of Meredith Rosier to the mythical ceramics of Kim Alderman, from the luscious and moving photographs of Bernard Gerson to the extraordinary assemblages of Lenny Kislin, TWELVE mixes powerful works that end up in surprising conversations with each other.

"Her canvases are constructed and divided simply and prepared with a dry ground. She determines and mixes the colors – thinning paint with oil – and from there begins a meditative process of pouring, dripping or splashing, patiently waiting as each paint layer reveals itself. The majority of the new works present canvases halved by painted panels of saturated, jewel-like color – glowing lapis lazuli blues, radiating golds, reds, ochres, and deep purple-blacks. The paintings’ two halves interact at the center line, sometimes merging, sometimes exposing their divide. Ephemeral, overlapping fields of paint quietly share in the mystery of their making – Steir’s process of painting begins with a controlled act (a chosen color, a decisive gesture), the result is a collaboration with gravity. The “non-intention” of [John] Cage and introspective spirituality of [Agnes] Martin is evident. As Steir says, “I can’t do it again. I can’t replicate it even if I know what happened. That’s the pleasure of it."

This survey of leading women artists examines the crucial feminist contribution to the development of deconstructivism in the 1970s and ’80s.

As the term suggests, deconstructivism involved taking apart and examining source material, generally borrowed from the mass media, to expose the ways commercial images reveal the mechanisms of power.

Women had a particularly high stake in this kind of examination and were disproportionately represented among artists who practiced it.

The exhibition includes 68 photographs, prints, paintings, videos, and installations by 22 artists and one artist’s collaborative.

Mitchell is recognized as a principal figure – and one of the few female artists – in the second generation of American Abstract Expressionists, after the aesthetic breakthroughs of Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. Her early works are characterized as turbulent and related to personal bereavement. This turbulence is often expressed in opposites: dense versus transparent strokes, warm versus cool palettes, gridded structure versus chaos, and choppy versus continuous brushstrokes. Working for the most part on multiple panels or large-scale canvases, she strived to evince a natural, rather than constructed, rhythm from the composition, which emanated from the expansiveness of her gesture and from her uninhibited use of color.

For her first solo museum exhibition in North America, Berlin-based artist Claudia Wieser (b. 1973, Freilassing, Germany) will present a site-specific installation of glazed ceramic tiles and prismatic mirrored facets against a background of geometrically-patterned wallpaper. In addition to the tile and mirror wall relief, Wieser will show a new series of colorful line drawings that play on the installation's optical and spatial illusions and serve to foreground her distinctive approach to abstraction. Together, the works mark the experiential and the intangible through precise geometries imbued with layers of spiritual, psychic, and phenomenal meaning that lead the viewer into contemplative spaces where the primacy of mark-making and viewing become fused.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York will present a month-long retrospective of the work of Barbara Hammer, spanning from her first films from the late 60s to the premiere of her new film Generations, made in collaboration with Gina Carducci (Stone Welcome Mat). From September 15 to October 13, the museum will screen a total of 15 themed programmes covering both her experimental and documentary work. Barbara Hammer will be present at some of the screenings to discuss her films or read from her recently published autobiography, Hammer! Making Movies Out of Sex and Life (The Feminist Press, 2010). The event Modern Mondays: Hidden Hammer, An Evening with Barbara Hammer (October 4, 19h) will concentrate on her performance, photography, and installation work, and discuss some of the lesser known and hidden aspects of her practice.

The Drawing Center will present an enhanced version of an exhibition originally on view at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima), UK in 2009. This presentation is comprised of approximately 50 graphite, watercolor, and ink on paper drawings made by Gerhard Richter (b. 1932, Dresden, Germany) over a period of five decades from 1966 to 2005. Although Richter is most celebrated as a painter, this exhibition focuses on the artist’s works on paper and explores his complex personal relationship with drawing. The first of its kind in the U.S., the exhibition will also be Richter’s first solo show in a public institution in New York since 40 Years of Painting at The Museum of Modern Art (2002).

"Born to a peasant from Xiangtan, Hunan, Qi became a carpenter at 14, and learned to paint by himself. After he turned 40, he traveled, visiting famous scenic spots in China. After 1917 he settled in Beijing. In his later years, he continued to make "later-year innovations."

He is perhaps the most noted contemporary Chinese painter for the whimsical, often playful style of his watercolor works.

His pseudonyms include Qí Huáng (齊璜) and Qí Wèiqīng (齐渭清). The subjects of his paintings include almost everything, commonly animals, scenery, figures, toys, vegetables, and so on. He theorized that "paintings must be something between likeness and unlikeness, much like today's vulgarians, but not like to cheat popular people". In his later years, many of his works depict mice, shrimp, or birds.

He was also good at seal carving and called himself "the fortune of three hundred stone seals".
In 1953 he was elected to the president of the Association of Chinese Artists. He died in Beijing in 1957."

Miyake (1975- ) is best known for her photography works and drawings working predominately in the past few years with the photogram. Despite being photography, the photogram requires no need of cameras. By arranging objects directly onto light sensitive papers and exposing to light, it appears as a photography work.
Miyake uses various objects such as buttons, spangles, cutouts and layers of drawings on thin papers. Moving and staggering to place, each object produces great gradation and peculiar depth and texture on the surface. As each works are made one by one, carefully, with a different plot and process, most of her works has no edition.

Romanian-born, Muller moved to Germany in 1987.
Her short stories and essays depict the extremes of life under totalitarianism. Her poetic language juxtaposes the brutality of lives depicted and, again, we acknowledge and accept the human condition with compassion and grace.

In the words of the Nobel Foundation:
"who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed"

The Land of Green Plums is one of her few works translated into English and won the International Dublin Impac Literary Award in 1998.

Ruth Padel resigned yesterday from her short-lived position as first woman Poetry Chair at Oxford University. She admitted sending emails to journalists outlining sexual harassment charges brought against her rival who resigned from the proceedings.

Some call this poetic justice. Others speak of chauvinism.

Jackie Kay mourned the loss of Padel, telling The Guardian newspaper that "the old boys have closed in on her."

"It would not have happened to a man, and I am very sad," she said.

Novelist Jeanette Winterson, herself an Oxford graduate, told the paper that her alma mater was "a sexist little dump."
